Janine Antoni Response

Janine Antoni's work Lick and Lather was very interesting to me in the way in which she was eating away at herself and bathing herself. Each of these acts dissolved the actual bust and portrayed the washing away of her insecurities. I felt this was a very personal performance, showing the audience the kind of relationship she has with herself. The act of washing the bust of herself seemed to be conflicting, because the bust deteriorated as she washed. It was if she was washing herself away. I felt it was a personal endeavor that each of us is faced with everyday. Looking in the mirror and knowing yourself can be a strange experience. Her work was very elaborate and well thought out, which I really appreciated. Overall, I was moved by Antoni's work and found it inspiring.
